CT Crew Spotlight: Christine Nguyen

Growing up, I had big dreams and aspirations of working in the thrilling world of entertainment. I always wanted to be a writer, and was constantly imagining and creating stories throughout my youth. However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I graduated during the COVID pandemic. With quarantines and a dwindling economy, the entertainment industry faced heavy layoffs and hiring freezes. I found myself stumbling through various random jobs, feeling lost without a sense of direction.

During this period, I longed for something more. My love for storytelling had always been about connecting with others, and this period of isolation and social distancing made me reflect on the impact I wanted my career to have. That's when Changing Tides entered my life.

While searching for jobs in the nonprofit sector, I stumbled upon Changing Tides (CT), a program of Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC). Its mission to de-stigmatize mental health in the AAPI community hit home for me, and I decided to take a leap of faith and join their cause. In late 2022, I became Changing Tides’ Assistant Program Coordinator.

One of the most remarkable experiences during my time at Changing Tides was my involvement in Ripple Effect: Walk for Suicide Prevention. With excitement and enthusiasm, I stepped in as the volunteer lead, working side by side with our amazing coordinator and a dedicated team of volunteers. The event was a testament to the power of unity. Families and community gathered together, as we celebrated the lives of those who tragically died by suicide. It wasn't just about fundraising and spreading awareness; it was about creating a space of support and understanding. Witnessing this incredible outpouring of compassion left me inspired, humbled, and forever grateful to be part of Changing Tides.

Reflecting on my journey with this organization, I admit that I’ve paused to wonder if things were too good to be true. But as time went on, and my doubts were consistently proven false, I felt reassured about my purpose, the mission, and that everyone at Changing Tides and LTSC is genuinely wonderful. Their authenticity, care, and dedication truly radiate in everything they do.

Graduating in the midst of adversity and stepping into an uncertain post-pandemic world, I’m grateful to have discovered my purpose and a community that cares deeply. Changing Tides opened my eyes to the profound impact we can have when we come together for a common cause. And while it may not be script writing, I’m honoring my lifelong passion for building connections with an organization that I believe is saving lives.
